Khlong Chong Nonsi Park, a newly opened public park near BTS Chong Nonsi, is set to be the lungs of Bangkok in 2022, providing a green sanctuary for the city's residents.

Created Jun 5, 2023

Hello everyone! Today, I'm here to take you on a tour of a brand new park in the heart of Bangkok. It's called "Khlong Chong Nonsi Park." It just opened recently, and let me tell you, it's absolutely stunning! But before we go and admire its beauty, let's take a look at the background of this canal and understand why it transformed from an ordinary canal to a beautiful park like this.

Regarding the history of Khlong Chong Nonsi, it originally started at Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem, near Chalong Krung Alley. However, due to the winding nature of the original area, the entire Khlong Chong Nonsi waterway was filled in during this period. It transformed into the current Chalong Krung Alley and Tria Bridge Alley, as you see it today.

Currently, Khlong Chong Nonsi begins at Surawong Road, and there has been a road, Narathiwat Rachanakarin Road, running parallel to this canal. Initial water quality testing conducted at the Surawong Road section of Khlong Chong Nonsi revealed high levels of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) reaching up to 90 milligrams per liter, making it the most severely polluted waterway, ranking at number one.

Due to this reason, Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin, the former Governor of Bangkok during the year 2007, had a vision to develop all the canals in this area into green spaces and improve the water quality within them. Mr. Aswin Kwanmuang, the current Governor of Bangkok, has continued this initiative, leading to the creation of the "Khlong Chong Nonsi Park" project we have today.

Regarding the construction plan, it will be divided into five sections as follows:

Section 1: From Surawong Road to Sathorn Road, covering a distance of 800 meters.

Section 2: From Sathorn Road to Narathiwat Rachanakarin 7 Alley, covering a distance of 200 meters.

Section 3: From Narathiwat Rachanakarin 7 Alley to Chan Road, covering a distance of 1.6 kilometers.

Section 4: From Chan Road to Ratchadaphisek Road, covering a distance of 1 kilometer.

Section 5: From Ratchadaphisek Road to Phra Ram 3 Road, covering a distance of 900 meters.

The budget for this construction project exceeds 980 million baht. However, don't be alarmed by the numbers alone. If we delve into the details of the five sections, the average cost per square meter is around 7,000 to 8,000 baht. Considering the total area of the project, which spans over 70 rai, this should give you an idea.

According to the project's publicity, this project will utilize a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) system, which is the same system used in the Cheonggyecheon Stream project in South Korea. Additionally, in the initial construction phase, pedestrian pathways were designed to connect with the Skywalk, providing access to the Universal Design public park. These pathways are long and meandering, covering an area of approximately 731.4 square meters.

Currently, the project is approximately 95% complete in Phase 2, and it is expected that the remaining 4 sections will be completed by August 2565 (2022).

Let's talk about Phase 2 of the project, which is almost complete and was just unveiled on December 25, 2564, coinciding with Christmas Day. This location can be considered as Thailand's first canal-side public park, and it is huge! In Phase 2, the park is divided into two zones.

The Activity Plaza Zone will consist of 3D Printing, a Fog system, waterfall walls, large tree planting, and diverse plant species along with beautiful decorative lighting.

The Skywalk Zone features a granite-paved walkway with installed guardrails. Surrounding the walkway are large trees and shrubs, while the ground is made of concrete to provide access to the park. This area is connected to the BTS Skytrain Chong Nonsi Station and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

For those who wish to visit and enjoy the beauty of Chong Nonsi Canal Park, I recommend coming around 5:30 PM or later. The weather is usually pleasant during that time, making it perfect for taking photos at the "Chong Nonsi Bridge." Currently, the bridge is decorated with beautiful lighting, providing an opportunity to capture stunning pictures.

The Khlong Chan Chong Nonsi Park is the latest hotspot for Bangkok residents this year. It is a picturesque location that offers great photo opportunities.

Genie believes that the creation of a new public park to increase green spaces in Bangkok is an excellent choice. Thailand is considered to have a significantly low green space per capita, approximately 7.08 square meters per person, which is much lower compared to other countries. In the future, we may see an increase in green spaces throughout Thailand. Meanwhile, Genie invites everyone to enjoy the fresh air and have a joyful time during the long holidays.
