"Green Bridge," a new landmark in the city center, missed out on being a popular check-in spot.

Created Jun 8, 2023

Genie believes that many of you may already be familiar with the name "Green Bridge" as it is a well-known elevated walkway that connects Lumpini Park and Benjakitti Park. The bridge was built in 1999, but over time, it has become worn-out and neglected, resulting in fewer visitors. Another significant factor is that the bridge is 1.6 kilometers long but has only three access points. During nighttime, it can be quite dark and may give a sense of insecurity to those passing through. However, this upcoming renovation of the "Green Bridge" promises to be grand, luxurious, and truly remarkable. You should definitely check it out!

The starting point of the development and improvement of the "Green Bridge" project began in 2019. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), UddC-CEUS (Center for Urban Design and Development), and Underpass Studio engaged in discussions regarding the renovation and development of the structure of the "Green Bridge." This is because the area is prone to sexual harassment and is one of the initial areas of concern in Bangkok. The existing condition of the "Green Bridge" is deteriorating, both on and under the bridge.

Through consultations on the renovation, it was found that this project is large and highly complex. The BMA, UddC-CEUS, Lighting Research and Innovation Center (LRIC), and Underpass Studio collaborated with four design and architecture companies:

1. Atum Design Co., Ltd.

2. Landscape Collaboration Co., Ltd.

3. Cubic Engineering and Architectural Consultants Ltd.

4. Thai-Tham Devel-opment Ltd.

Together, they volunteered to oversee the design aspects of various structures with great enthusiasm.

The goal of the current "Green Bridge" renovation can be described as creating a "new urban landmark" that connects and links people within the city. This can be achieved through four levels of connectivity:

1. To connect the central economic area, specifically Ratchadaphisek Road and Wireless Road.

2. To link the environmental systems of two large urban public parks.

3. To establish pedestrian and bicycle connections that are universally designed, allowing people of all ages and genders to easily use them.

4. To connect the economy and society, aiming to improve the overall quality of life.

The "Green Bridge" project is divided into five parts as follows:

1. Khlong Phai Singto

The first area is focused on improving the area along Khlong Phai Singto, which is over 700 meters long. The aim is to create a water-immersed learning area, located near Benjakitti Park and a tobacco factory. Within the canal, there will be a variety of aquatic plants that have the potential to treat wastewater. What makes it special is that the walkway will be a floating pathway that adjusts to the water level, providing flexibility.

2. Upper Deck Area of the Skywalk Bridge

Moving on to the second section, it involves the transformation of the hot and arid upper deck area of the Skywalk Bridge. The goal is to create a space where people can walk, sit, exercise, or even ride bicycles from Benjakitti Park to Lumpini Park. Additionally, there will be an addition of green spaces with shrubs and plants suitable for the local climate. Moreover, there are plans to include viewing platforms on both sides of the path, providing an opportunity to admire the scenery from two perspectives.

3. Under the Bridge

The third area refers to the space underneath the bridge, located above Khlong Phai Singto. The renovation here focuses on providing ample lighting throughout the night and creating an open and spacious area where people can sit and relax. This zone tends to be dark and secluded during nighttime, so the aim is to improve its ambiance. Additionally, there will be efforts to enhance the water quality in the canal, connecting it to the city's large-scale water treatment system in order to ensure good water quality.

4. On the Floating Bridge Area

Now we come to the fourth part, which involves the renovation of the floating bridges: Ratchada Floating Bridge, the elevated walkway above the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway, and the suspended bridge across the Wireless Road Intersection. These bridges serve as the entrances to the "Green Bridge" project and are designed to be distinctive landmarks that leave a lasting impression on people's minds. Moreover, an exceptional feature is that most of the floating bridges will be covered by lightweight and transparent structures, providing shade and protection from rain in intervals. They will also have unique and visually appealing shapes.

5. Electrical Works and Lighting

Now we come to the final area, which involves improvements in the design of lighting to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere throughout the surrounding space. The aim is to ensure that the lighting is environmentally friendly on the bridges while also enhancing safety for users.

Connecting Points between Each Location

As Bangkok Metropolitan Administration oversees Lumpini Park, and the Treasury Department oversees Benjakitti Park, there is a desire to establish connectivity among all three projects. Therefore, the design team has created significant connecting points that link all three projects together. Here is how they have been divided:

1. At the junction between Benjakitti Park and Khlong Phasi Charoen, an interconnected area has been designed to provide a seamless and immersive space for learning about the Khlong Phasi Charoen waterway.

2. The aim is to ensure that the connections with the entrances from Sukhumvit Soi 4 and Sukhumvit Soi 10 are easily accessible to the public and aesthetically pleasing.

3. The pedestrian bridge over the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway has been carefully designed to include ramps and elevated walkways, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to conveniently cross the bridge.

4. Lumpini Park has been thoughtfully designed to include a floating plaza of moderate size, providing a venue for hosting a variety of festivals and events. It also serves as a connection point to the upcoming improvement areas within the park.

At the opposite side of Lumpini Park, there is another landmark that can be called a global landmark. Once completed, this project will be known as the tallest building in Thailand and the tallest in Southeast Asia, reaching a height of 437 meters, known as the "Signature Tower." From this project, you can clearly see the panoramic view of the "Green Bridge" and the distinct features of Lumpini Park. This project is called One Bangkok. If you want more detailed information, you can read about it.

The completion of this new landmark is expected to be in September 2022, not too far away.

Getting to the "Green Bridge" is not difficult, and there are various options available.

For private cars, you can park your vehicle near Lumpini Park School on Wireless Road.

If you prefer taking the subway, you can take the MRT underground train and get off at Lumpini Park Station. From there, you'll need to walk along Wireless Road for about 750 meters. Alternatively, you can also take a taxi or a motorbike taxi.

If you prefer the BTS skytrain, you can take it to Phloen Chit Station. Then, you can hire a motorbike taxi to take you to Wireless Road, which is about 1 kilometer away.

From my perspective, Genie believes that the renovation plan for the Green Bridge, which is part of the "Bangkok 250 Project," will transform the old city of Bangkok into a more livable city. The project is closely connected to two of Bangkok's top public parks. Along the pedestrian and cycling paths, you'll find spots to relax, unwind, go for a run, or bike ride. It's suitable for people of all ages and genders. I can assure you that once this place is fully renovated, it will become a popular landmark for everyone to enjoy.

Once the Green Bridge project is completed, Genie won't miss the opportunity to capture and update the surrounding atmosphere, so that everyone can experience it through this article.
